Sbase
FAQ - The most common questions answered
What
is the campaign about?
The campaign is to see an Arts, Creative Industries and Heritage Centre
open in Stafford.
What
would the centre include?
A state of the Art live performance venue for music, dance, theatre,
comedy, basically anything that can be done onstage. The size of the
venue would determine the size of acts that could be shown.
Exhibition space, artist workshops, rehearsal facilities, start up units,
a heritage archive (as yet undetermined) plus a café and bar
meeting place. We envisage a centre of excellence, a place of quality,
alternative yet complimentary to existing facilities, a place where
like minded people can work, meet, share ideas or just hang out.
What
do you mean by the "Arts"?
This quite simply means Fine Art through to Sculpture, modern computer
medium through to Fashion. If a list were made something would be missed
so use your imagination.
What
are Creative Industries?
"Those industries that have their origin in individual creativity,
skill and talent and which have a potential for wealth and job creation
through the generation and exploitation of intellectual property."
Taking the definition adopted by the UK Government in 1997, the definition
of creative industries has been understood to include the sub-sectors
listed below in the UK. These links take you to the 2001 mapping documents
on the Department for Culture, Media and Sport website. A new mapping
document will be produced in 2004.
Advertising,
Architecture, Art and Antiques Market, Crafts, Design, Designer Fashion,
Film and Video, Interactive Leisure Software, Music, Performing Arts,
Publishing, Software and Computer Services, Television and Radio
For further information see: http://www2.britishcouncil.org/arts-creative-industries-sectors.htm
In
addition the cultural heritage, tourism and museum industries are identified
as being closely related to the creative industries; particularly in
the provision of services which often fall within the definition of
creative industries.
Does
sbase have a building in mind?
Obviously the whole campaign is centered on a building. The steering
group of the campaign has been very conscious of the needs of all those
who may either frequent the building as consumers (audience) and those
who may wish to take space or rent within the building (partitioners).
The reason we are running a campaign is first and foremost to establish
those needs and requirements. We do not intend to create a wish list,
simply a practical, pragmatic business plan from the requirements identified
from those joining the campaign. From this we will identify a building
or plot of land on which to establish sbase.
Who
is the steering group?
Four individuals, - with a dream in mind.
Mick Askey, Jane Cannell, Steve Cartwright, Jim Wheeler. Contact details
can be found within this site.
Are
the sbase steering group paid to do this?
No. In fact it costs them all time and money - they do it because they
believe in it and want it.
How
can people contact and/or contribute to sbase?
Sbase holds regular meetings on the first Tuesday of every month. Details
of those meetings can be found on the home page of this site. Venues
change of course so keep looking back. This is the best place to come
and meet the sbase steering group and air your views. If you cannot
do this then email info@sbase.org.uk or phone Jim on 01785 211343
How
will sbase effect or compliment existing facilities such as the Shire
Hall Gallery and the Gatehouse?
Sbase will be a community run facility concentrating on local talent,
providing a local showcase all year round. It will be a 24/7 facility,
catering for arts and artist activities not catered for locally. Most
towns have "plural" activity centres, which provide a mix
of activities and provide healthy competition. sbase will be an addition
to the town's cultural mix and will not set itself against any established
arts venue, it will simply fill a gap. Not one person can know everything
and not one place can cater for all. Sbase will be the epitome of democracy
within the arts.
How
will sbase be funded?
Sbase may be funded completely privately, completely by grants or even
a combination of both. The sbase campaign will establish what is needed,
where it is, and how we pay for it.
Nothing is written in stone. (Privately means interested individual
parties/companies willing to buy into this project)
Should
I join the campaign?
Everyone can join the campaign, moreover we need you to join the campaign.
An audience is as important as a performer. Normally the audience is
bigger than the performer or exhibitionist. Without the audience a performer
exhibitionist does not exist. Both are equally important. Both camps
should join the campaign and NOW
How can I help?
Join the campaign now. You do not have to give all your details simply
put your name on the database. We need you to prove there is a need
for this type of building. Everyone moans but do they try and change
things? Join Now
What
if I have further questions?

don't want to do that email us info@sbase.org.uk or phone jim on 01785
211343. Ask your questions, tell us what you want. Sbase is what we
