It is apparent that some people do not fully understand the concept of sbase and all it entails. We have therefore added a Further Questions and Answers page which we hope will help to clarify certain aspects of the campaign and what it is about.

WHY?

  • For years, Stafford Borough has had untold creative talent within its boundaries - individuals or small groups quietly and independently pursuing their craft.
  • Stafford Borough has produced its own national and internationally renowned 'stars' from across the creative spectrum.
  • Unfortunately, Stafford itself has done little to encourage or celebrate
its creatives. Consequently how often have you heard people from the
town say they are from Stoke or Birmingham, so where is the pride in the Borough?

  • It's time for Stafford to recognize and support its creative talent, in return, the talent will reward the town, and surrounding area.
  • The creative community needs to work together: as individuals or even small groups, we all share practical needs and feel strongly about the potential of emerging local opportunities.
  • There is hard evidence concerning the level of demand and needs of artists, creative industries, and local heritage sector.
  • There are many parallels with the local heritage community. Voluntary sector heritage groups have contributed much over the years, and feel strongly about the need to raise the profile and celebrate the history of Stafford Borough. They have identified a clear need for a museum/heritage centre to put Stafford's history firmly on the map.
  • Together we can achieve building based facilities that will support our respective creative work which will offer community and economic benefits to the town and the surrounding area.

WHAT?

  • Sbase is a simple idea. It's a building or a group of buildings.
  • The Arts, Creative Industries, & Heritage Centre could incorporate studio workspace, a multi-use performance and conference venue, local heritage centre, artist-run gallery, and any other specific facilities that are identified through this public consultation, and formulated into a business plan.
  • We need a creative focal point to work in, meet in, socialize in - one we can shout about nationally if not internationally.
  • Many other towns and cities in the U.K. have their own "Custard Factories" or Cultural Centres, big or small, that support local creative production and facilities available for the wider public - why not Stafford?
  • It is hard to find anyone who does not feel Stafford deserves a similar museum - it used to have one!
  • The County Town needs an exciting new facility - we want sbase, do you?

HOW?

  • Sbase is currently a campaign to achieve an Arts, Creative Industries and Heritage Centre for Stafford.
  • It is an umbrella group for anyone who aspires to achieve a new community facility.
  • sbase is led by a committed steering group.

WHEN?

  • There has never been a better time than now. There is hard evidence of a demand and a need from many quarters.
  • We need your active involvement in the campaign to push this forward.

SUMMARY

What is sbase all about?
It is a campaign to achieve an Arts, Creative Industries and Heritage Centre.
The centre could be a single building, a split site or a new build.
The campaign, alongside the harder business planning looking at market research to evidence the levels of demand and the nature of the need with a view to creating a financially viable building or group of buildings that are fit for purpose and excellent in the facilities that they provide.
This facility could incorporate studio workspace, a multi-use performance and conference venue, a local heritage centre, artist-run gallery, and any other specific facilities that are identified through this public consultation and business planning process.

Where will the money come from ? How will it be funded ?
The initial capital will be funded by a combination of Public and Private finance which could include arts and heritage lottery, creative advantage fund (AWM), regeneration funding.
Running costs/revenue will be achieved by a combination of public, private and voluntary sector clients who lease office or studio space or who hire rooms or specialist facilities on a project by project basis. There are also significant income generation opportunities from catering and bar facilities depending on the nature of the final building or buildings.

  • Work space sublets, hire charges (rooms, specialist equipment)
  • Franchise opportunities (catering, specialist retail, gallery)
